Yomi in Tom Vasel's Top 100 of All Time
Monday, December 5, 2011 at 11:08AM
Tom Vasel from the Dice Tower just posted his new Top 100 list and Yomi is #12. That's not top 100 of the YEAR but of ALL TIME. Wow, thanks Tom!
Here's the short video segment:
Great news, and thanks for playing, everyone.

Congratulations, well deserved.
That's great, guess Yomi has good staying power with him a year later after he gave it game of the year.
I noticed that at the end of his Dominion portion (#11) he mentioned that its not the best deck builder around and that another game had replaced it for him and that we would out what it was in the top 10 (not yet revealed). I don't suppose there's any chance it could be Puzzle Strike?
I think Puzzle Strike would definitely be deserving of a top 10 spot, but IIRC Tom said he strongly preferred cards to chips
If there is another deckbuilding game in his top 10 it pretty much has to be Puzzle Strike.
There were no great changes done to Thunderstone this year, Nightfall is universally disliked for many reasons (even though Vasel liked it in his review), RuneAge is interesting thanks to its many modes of play but otherwise average, Eminent Domain is pretty good but really is mainly a hybrid of other games and the opinion on Ascension differs greatly from player to player but Vasel didn't enjoy it particularly much in his previous review.
Yes, he likes cards better than chips, but that is not a dealbreaker in my opinion. The fact that the mainstream mean of playing such games is actually liked by many should not be surprising nor deemed to be used only out of tradition. Yes, some people made chip versions of Dominion, which is what Sirlin usually quotes as part of an evidence supporting "chips>cards" argument, but that (that statement, I'm not reffering to other, valid points in that debate) is rather silly in my opinion. Different players make different homemade components for different games and unless it becomes a widely spread trend (which chip-Dominion is not) it really doesn't reflect on the game in question too much.
Vasel could have either changed his mind regarding the issue, or got the upgrade pack with its screens, which solve the problem of how akward it is to hold too many chips in your hands in comparison to doing the same with cards, or maybe he printed the card version and plays that.
That being said Im not sure what Vasel said neccessarily means that there has to be another deckbuilding game in his top10 and it would be slightly surprising to see Puzzle Strike that high mainly because it's very confrontational and the vast majority of players prefer games with less direct interaction e.g. Dominion base set (same issue with how only a tiny fraction of gamers play competitive multiplayer in comparison to how many play singleplayer).
But who knows, we shall see.
Yeah I was curious about that too CM, but after rewatching I think he was being more general in stating that another game took #10 from Dominion, not that another deckbuilding game did. Would be awesome if PS was in the top 10 but unless something dramatic changed I think Vasel liked Yomi a whole lot more (GoTY and all lol).
I don't know if you noticed but Yomi is also 61# on People's choice.
Oh, actually I didn't notice that, thanks for pointing it out. Looks like it beat Chess, which is people's choice #68. The people have spoken.
