Gamer's Corner Interview

If you have yet another 2 hours to spare, here's an interview with me at Gamer's Corner. We cover many topics such as the design of online modes, of tutorial modes, of SF4, randomness in competitive games, Jonathan Blow, and more.

Really interesting interview, glad you posted it.

The guys totally missed the point of the Quake Live 'tutorial', though. Since Quake Live is basically an online version of Quake 3 which has been out for years now, the 'tutorial' is meant to gauge your skill and knowledge of the game. If you don't know how to strafe- or rocketjump, you'll simply end up facing a worse bot which will further test your skill. At the end of the match you get a hidden rank which is used for matchmaking. The tests are there because not everything in Quake is just shooting, and if you don't know how to do them you get matched against other people who can't do them either.

I totally agree on the tutorial teaching these things after the tests, though.

it was interesting to hear you bring up MtG as a game in which the randomness is largely mitigated seeing as the top players regularly place highly when, in fact, that last two major events (pro tour kyoto and grand prix chicago) where won by the same person - gabriel nassif, now widely considered the third best player of all time.

looking forward to finding out what you may or may not be working on. ;)

This interview is totally awful and biased. No fault of you, Sirlin, but these reviewers are horrible. This podcast is proof positive that someone who doesn't know anything about games can do a podcast and have people listen.

re: SF4 jumps having high vertical acceleration

I just assumed they did it so it's easier for new players to jump over fireballs. Spending more time at the peak of your jump means more time above fireball height. Then again I'm terrible at fighting games, so I might be missing something.

But yeah, great interbview so far!

Response by Sirlin: Good guess, that could be the reasoning.
